| Un visiteur inhabituel sur la superbe cote Est de la Tasmanie by Bertrand Cadart C’était il y a 210 ans, après une vie tumultueuse et aventurière, que le citoyen François Péron s’éteignait à Cérilly petit village de sa naissance nichée au fond du Bourbonnais, dans le département français de l’Allier. La boucle était bouclée par cet homme encore jeune. Pour ceux qui désirent « creuser » sa vie extraordinaire il suffit, entre autres, de se promener sur la toile et de taper son nom et celui de Nicolas Baudin, le capitaine commandant l’expédition de recherches et d’exploration commanditée par le consul Bonaparte en 1800, pendant la paix d’Amiens. Il est également possible de contacter : « La Société des Amis de François Péron » qui a son siège est à Cérilly et la société des amis de Nicolas Baudin à Villeneuve-Saint-Georges dans la banlieue parisienne. François Péron était remarquablement instruit particulièrement lorsque l’on sait que la majorité de son savoir était autodidacte. Et c’est en « amateur éclairé » qu’à bord du Géographe (le navire amiral de l’expédition) il conduisit des milliers d’expérimentations tant avec les plantes, les animaux et les hommes découverts pendant les prodigieuses pérégrinations des navires Français. Bien que sans enfants, lui-même, son frère a fondé une branche parallèle qui perpétue le nom de famille. C’est ainsi, qu’au mois de Février 2010, la petite communauté, vivant sur la très touristique côte Freycinet de Tasmanie et enthousiasmée par l’histoire de l’expédition Baudin, débarquée sur place en 1802. A vu arriver Monsieur Jean-Etienne Péron (31 ans) un descendant non direct certes mais relativement proche de François. Jean-Etienne, dont l’imagination a été fouettée par la fougue aventurière et la soif d’explorer de l’ancêtre François, avait depuis longtemps caressé le rêve de parcourir l’immense continent Australien et la minuscule Tasmanie pour suivre ses traces laissées en 1802 et 1803 à bord des navires le Géographe et le Naturaliste. Accueilli à Bicheno par Bertrand Cadart, le célèbre et unique Maire d’origine Française en Australie, (Municipalité de Glamorgan- Spring Bay): www.gsbc.tas.gov.au www.freycinetcoast.com.au www.freycinetcoast.info L’intrépide Jean-Etienne est tout d’abord allé visiter les « Dunes Péron » près de Saint-Helens et ensuite, grâce à la générosité de Maria Island Cruises, www.mariacruises.com.au le fameux Cap Péron situé à la pointe de l’extrême Sud du parc national Tasmanien de l’île Maria au large du village de Triabunna. www.discovertasmania.com/…/maria island national park Escorté par Le Maire et par Madame Jennifer Lathwell, fondatrice de l’extraordinaire « From France to Freycinet » festival biennal www.fromfrancetofreycinet.com.au Jean-Etienne Péron resta bouche bée devant la beauté sauvage, presque effrayante, du Cap Péron dont le granite semble avoir été déchiqueté par une main de géant. « Non seulement cet endroit du bout du monde, a été nommé après mon ancêtre » constatait Jean-Etienne Péron, « mais en plus c’est un endroit véritablement superbe, ce qui ne gâte rien !» Par une coïncidence tout à fait inhabituelle, il se trouve que le festival « From France to Freycinet » a choisi François Péron comme thème majeur pour cette année, Jean-Etienne qui n’avait, bien entendu pas du tout réalisé a commenté : « cela donne une saveur tout à fait spéciale à mon séjour dans cette Tasmanie de rêve que personne ne connaît ». Après la Tasmanie, l’intrépide voyageur a prévu de se rendre en Australie-Méridionale, puis en Australie-Occidentale deux régions dans lesquelles le nom Péron figure sur de nombreuses carte y compris le parc National Péron ! www.sharkbay.asn.au/frperon |

was no mistaking the aquiline features of his ancestor five generations removed
when I met Jean-Etienne Francois Peron outside the Swansea RSL club on an
evening in February 2010.
Later, Jean-Etienne was to pose before a reproduction of a painting of his famous forebear Francois Peron. The From France to Freycinet Committee members were amazed at the likeness. Francois Peron was one of 22 scientists and natural history artists aboard the two ships of the French Expedition to Tasmania in 1802: Geographe and Naturaliste. Nicolas Baudin was the commander of the Expedition sponsored by the government of Napoleon Bonaparte in 1800. After a tumultuous and adventurous life, François Péron died in his little French village of Cérilly, nestled deep inside the Bourbonnais region in the department of l’Allier. François Péron was an almost totally self taught scientist. His level of erudition was nothing short of amazing as he named and gathered several thousand plant species and conducted experiments in many of the divisions of the sciences. Jean Etienne Peron was invited to attend a meeting of the From France to Freycinet Festival committee. His presence was serendipitous in view of the theme chosen by the committee for the 2010 Festival, viz. the observations enroute of the Expedition as recorded by Francois Peron. Jean Etienne’s childhood imagination had been inspired by the achievements of his ancestor and he dreamed of retracing the trail of the Frenchmen aboard the Geographe and Naturaliste. He
visited the Péron Dunes near St.Helens before visiting Swansea then
Cape Peron at the southern tip of Maria Island (thanks to the generosity
